Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need in order to play with amiibo?

You will need an amiibo figure, a compatible game, and either a Wii U system or a New Nintendo 3DS XL system.

For use with Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL and Nintendo 2DS systems, a Nintendo 3DS NFC Reader/Writer accessory is required. (Sold separately, available Sept. 25, 2015).

How many games can I save to a single amiibo figure at the same time?

An amiibo can save data for one game at a time. This means that game data will need to be deleted on an amiibo before it can be used with another game with read/write compatibility.

Currently, only Mario Party 10, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (when played on the New Nintendo 3DS XL system) save certain game data to compatible amiibo figures. Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer will also have read/write functionality and is scheduled to launch Sept. 25, 2015.

Can I play as my amiibo figure as a character in the games?

Compatibility and functionality of amiibo figures may vary by game.

Some titles allow you to play as your amiibo character. For example, in Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., when played on the New Nintendo 3DS XL system, you can tap a compatible amiibo figure to add them to your team and guide them in battle.

For full details and specific information, please check out the compatible games.

If I already have game data saved on my amiibo, can I still use that amiibo in other compatible games?

Yes, you can still use your amiibo to get bonus items in games like Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors. However, for other games that save data to your amiibo (such as Mario Party 10), you will need to delete any existing save data on the amiibo before using it with new read/write compatible game.

What does it mean when a game’s detail page says an amiibo figure is Read-only or Read/Write compatible?

An amiibo-compatible game can have either Read-Write or Read-only compatibility with an amiibo figure.

Read-only compatible means that you can tap the amiibo to the GamePad to get additional content. For example, the Mario amiibo will give you a special racing suit for your Mii™ character when used with the Mario Kart 8 game.

Read/Write compatible, on the other hand, means that you can get additional content AND save certain game data to the amiibo figure. For example, you can customize your character and then save it to your Mario amiibo in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. One amiibo can hold save data for one game at a time.

Currently, Mario Party 10, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (when played on the New Nintendo 3DS XL system) are the only games with Read/Write compatibility. Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer will also have Read/Write functionality and is scheduled to launch Sept. 25, 2015.

You can use an amiibo with save data on it in Read-only compatible games. That means you'll still get the additional content without having to use a different amiibo!

What do amiibo accessories do?

Specific features depend on the amiibo figure and the compatible game.

In general, some games (like Mario Party 10) will save certain game data to the amiibo figure. Other games (like Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors) will give you bonus content just for tapping an amiibo to the GamePad.

For full details, check out the compatibility chart.

This menu lets you link an amiibo with its owner's Mii and nickname, as well as delete game data if you'd like to use the amiibo with a different Read/Write-compatible game.

Do you have to have an amiibo figure in order to play amiibo-compatible games?

In general, you can play all games compatible with amiibo without using an amiibo figure. Using an amiibo figure is optional and will simply add new elements to the gameplay (depending on the game).

The only exception to this is the Mario Party 10 game's amiibo Party Mode. To access this mode, you'll need at least one compatible amiibo figure. All other modes in Mario Party 10 are accessible without an amiibo.
